Certification & Education Requirements
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology / Clinical Laboratory Science
- MLT or MLS certification (ASCP or equivalent) - required
- State licensure (if applicable)
- BLS preferred
- Experience with EPIC or Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferred
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of clinical laboratory experience
- Strong knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and protocols
- Experience in specimen collection, processing, and analysis
- Familiarity with hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and urinalysis
- Attention to detail and strong analytical skills
- Ability to follow quality control and safety standards
JOB SUMMARY
The Lab Technician is responsible for performing routine and complex laboratory tests that aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This role supports physicians and clinical teams by providing accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory results while ensuring compliance with laboratory standards, safety regulations, and quality control procedures.
The Lab Technician works in collaboration with laboratory scientists, pathologists, nurses, and healthcare providers to maintain efficient laboratory operations in a fast-paced clinical environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Testing & Analysis
- Perform laboratory tests in hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology
- Prepare specimens for analysis, ensuring correct labeling and handling
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments and equipment
- Validate test results and identify abnormal findings for review
Specimen Collection & Handling
- Collect blood and other specimens following established procedures
- Ensure proper specimen storage, transport, and disposal
- Follow infection control and safety guidelines at all times
Documentation & Compliance
- Accurately document test results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) or EPIC
- Maintain quality control records and participate in proficiency testing
- Adhere to CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and hospital laboratory standards
Collaboration & Communication
- Communicate critical values promptly to providers and nursing staff
- Work closely with laboratory supervisors and healthcare teams
- Support workflow efficiency and timely turnaround of lab results
Quality & Professional Practice
- Participate in quality improvement and safety initiatives
- Identify opportunities for process improvement
- Maintain competency through continuing education and training
