Áras Ghaoth Dobhair, a proudly community‑built and Gaeltacht‑based 41‑bed nursing home, is seeking an exceptional Director of Nursing / Person in Charge to lead our dedicated team and uphold our commitment to compassionate and resident‑centred care.
The Role
As Director of Nursing (Person in Charge), you will be the clinical and operational leader of the home. You will ensure the highest standards of care in line with HIQA regulations while strengthening a positive, supportive, community‑focused culture for residents and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop the nursing and care team with a strong emphasis on professional accountability.
- Ensure full regulatory compliance with HIQA standards and the Health Act 2007.
- Oversee all clinical governance, audits, risk management, safeguarding, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Build strong, compassionate relationships with residents, families, local GPs, allied health professionals, and community partners.
- Support and enhance the home’s culturally rich, Irish‑language‑friendly ethos.
- Manage staffing, rostering, supervision, and ongoing staff development.
- Ensure delivery of evidence‑based, person‑centred nursing care across all units, including dementia care.
- Act as the primary liaison with HIQA inspectors and external agencies.
Requirements
- Registered Nurse with active registration with the NMBI.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working with older persons within the past 5 years.
- Minimum 3 years in a nursing management or leadership role within a nursing home or similar regulated environment.
- Relevant management qualification (e.g., Nursing Management, Healthcare Leadership, Gerontology).
- Strong knowledge of HIQA standards, regulatory compliance, and best practice in elder care.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
- Commitment to promoting dignity, autonomy, and high‑quality lived experiences for residents.
- Advantage: Fluency in Irish or a willingness to engage with the language in a Gaeltacht setting.

Pay: €70,000.00-€85,000.00 per year
