Job Summary
The OPD Nurse ensures that the clinic runs smoothly and that patients receive safe, efficient care during their brief visit.
- Patient Triage: Assessing the urgency of a patient’s condition upon arrival and prioritizing them based on clinical need rather than just "first-come, first-served."
- Vitals & Preparation: Measuring and recording vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight) before the doctor’s consultation.
- Assisting Procedures: Helping physicians during minor surgical procedures, biopsies, dressings, or diagnostic tests (like ECGs or pap smears).
- Treatment Administration: Administering injections, vaccinations, or IV fluids as prescribed, and ensuring the "Five Rights" of medication safety.
- Health Education: Explaining prescriptions, dietary restrictions, and follow-up care to patients and their families.
- Inventory & Sterilization: Managing medical supplies, ensuring consultation rooms are stocked, and maintaining strict sterilization (autoclave) protocols for instruments.
- Documentation: Maintaining accurate Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and ensuring that all diagnostic reports are ready for the doctor's review.
Key Skills & Qualifications
OPD nurses handle a high volume of diverse cases, they must be versatile and highly organized.
- Educational Background: A Diploma in Nursing (GNM) or a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (B.Sc Nursing).
- Licensure: Active registration with the State or National Nursing Council.
- Clinical Proficiency: Expertise in phlebotomy (drawing blood), wound dressing, and basic life support (BLS).
- Communication Skills: The ability to explain complex medical instructions in simple terms to anxious patients.
- Multitasking: Handling multiple patients, phone calls, and administrative tasks simultaneously while maintaining a calm demeanor.
