Duties and responsibilities:
Clinical
Serves as a member of the direct patient care team and leads the nursing team in gaining exceptional skills to provide evidence-based comprehensive nursing care.
Ensure the clinical area has an appropriate number of staff and skill mix for the dependency level of the patients for the next 24 hours.
Follow nursing policies and guidelines in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.
Ensure staff awareness and delivery of care based on current best practices.
Ensure patient and family education is given to all patients.
Ensure the implementation of all accreditation standards.
Meet daily all patients and frequently meet VIP, vulnerable pre- and post-operative new admissions and critically ill patients to ensure appropriate and timely care.
Organize and coordinate patient care activities including procedures, therapies, and tests to achieve desired patient outcomes.
Conduct daily briefing of the staff in three shifts.
Play an active role in double-checking medication administration process, nursing procedures, transportation of special specimens and samples.
Double-check and verify blood and blood products transfusion.
Ensure staff provide compassionate care to the customers.
Ensure maintenance of patient privacy and confidentiality.
Identify and articulate effectively patient rights and responsibilities.
Ensure accuracy and completion of nursing documentation within the time frame.
Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care provided and its documentation.
Adhere to the hospital policies and protocols at all times.
Ensure competency of staff in essential skills required for delivering care within the clinical area.
Actively participate in the implementation of any change in practice within the clinical area.
Provide all required facilities and atmosphere for the patients which help in their speedy recovery from illness.
Ensure biomedical waste segregation is done as per the policy.
Ensure adherence to infection control practices by staff at all times.
Ensure timely reporting to doctor for abnormal reports at all times.
Accompany consultant or doctor for rounds and procedures.
Ensure medication management as per the standards by all staff.
Follow narcotic policy and be the custodian of the cabin key.
Ensure sample safety and blood transfusion safety.
Ensure adequate CSSD supplies at all times.
Managerial
Prepare the duty roster with adequate staff in each shift.
Ensure availability of adequate manpower, materials, equipment, and supplies.
Ensure that all equipment, furniture, and fittings are available in good working order to ensure comfort and safety to patients, visitors, and staff.
Be responsible for the overall administration of the unit assigned.
Actively participate in staff meetings, relevant committees, debriefing sessions, meetings with nursing leadership, and update staff about any policy changes or developments in the hospital.
Be the first line of reporting for staff and patient concerns.
Recognize own limitations and seek advice when unable to solve conflicts or problems.
Ensure effective and efficient use of all department resources.
Maintain proper discipline amongst the staff by following the hospital’s disciplinary policy.
Demonstrate skills in creating an environment which will promote open and honest discussion in which staff feel free to represent their views and be heard in an appropriate setting.
Ensure that all communication (verbal or written) between the ward and other departments is of a high standard both in its content and presentation.
Ensure that all written and electronically stored information is accessible only to authorized personnel.
Ensure that all staff is aware of the importance of the collection of statistical data and quality indicators.
Ensure timely quality indicators are sent to the head of the department accurately.
Report all incidents to the head of the department and maintain appropriate records.
Monitor the services provided by other departments, communicate any deficits in standards, and inform the concerned department.
Ensure staff adherence to health and safety standards at all times.
Be responsible for taking immediate action to deal with any problem which might affect patient, visitor, or staff safety.
Accept personal accountability for own practice as a registered nurse and work at all times within the code of conduct of nursing.
Develop own knowledge base ensuring evidence-based practice and contribute to the enhancement of patient care.
Identify and monitor the strengths, weaknesses, and performance of staff and guide them by counseling and necessary in-house training.
Be the role model for peers, subordinates, and students through performance, practice, appearance, and in action.
